Fiendish Nuclear Quiz

Q6. Not unlike cars, nuclear reactors can be “tuned up” in what is called uprating: as experience on their operation is accrued and as newer technology is made available, reactors may be slightly modified to increase their maximum power output at a relatively small cost. How much installed power did the USA gain by uprating their extant fleet of 96 reactors since 1990?

Unlucky! The answer was approximately 7 GW!

As of December 2020, power uprates for a total of more than 7.5 GW had been approved for the US reactors. This increase is equivalent to building of approximately seven new reactors and averages to more than 7.5% of the total power across the whole fleet.
